If you have frizzy hair, then you know the struggle. No matter if you have straight hair, wavy hair, thin hair, thick hair, or curly hair, your hair can frizz.
Frizzy hair can mean all sorts of things for your hair strand health. Your hair might be dry. You might live somewhere with a ton of humidity. Your hair might be damaged from years of heat styling, or you might exist in a wavy-curly hair limbo like I do.
I've been fighting frizz my whole life. My naturally thick hair has always tended to be dry, and when I'm not attacking it with a flat iron, it naturally sits as loose waves on top with an insane patch of curls underneath. Some nights, I sleep on a silk pillowcase or with my hair in a loose braid, but those smoothing methods never yield results.
As a beauty and fashion editor, I've been able to try a wide variety of hair products and tools for my hair type. I've finally found the perfect shampoo and conditioner duo that helps me say “farewell, frizz!” no matter if I heat-style my hair or not.
I sampled top frizzy hair-fighting shampoo and conditioner duos from E! reader-loved brands. Our sample pool included Briogeo, Virtue, and Oribe.
I tried each brand separately because I wanted to see how the products fought hair frizz on my air-dried hair, as well as how they performed after styling.
The best shampoo and conditioner duo would ideally help me create frizz-free waves, whether I slept on my hair wet or let it air dry. The best duo would also help create and maintain smoothness after using a styling tool, ideally keeping my hair smooth even when faced with sweat.
I gave each brand a score in the following categories:
Effectiveness in reducing frizz
Longevity of results
Virtue Smooth duo
I love how these pink bottles of shampoo and conditioner look in my shower. Virtue says that the shampoo "de-frizzes strand by strand to seal in moisture and shine," while the conditioner "soothes the cuticle, locks out humidity, and locks in moisture, giving hair a brilliant luster."
I loved how rich and silky the shampoo felt in my hands and on my head. The conditioner had a salon-fresh scent. My hair air-dried soft and wavy, with mostly the same texture all over my head.
It was far less frizzy than it normally is when it dries but still required a little heat styling around the front pieces and a chunk of hair here and there. Overall, I was pretty impressed.
My hair even stayed fairly smooth through two Pilates workouts until my next wash day! If you're serious about fighting frizz and have cash to spend, this is a great haircare duo.
Effectiveness in reducing frizz: 8/10
Longevity of results: 8/10
Briogeo Curl Charisma duo
I have been told multiple times that I must secretly have curly hair because my hair is multi-textured. Curly hair can become frizzy when it's not hydrated, so I decided to test this theory with a haircare duo meant for curls.
Briogeo's Curl Charisma line features a rice amino and avocado hydrating shampoo and a rice amino and shea curl-defining conditioner. The brand also offers a conditioning mask.
According to Briogeo, this line is designed to "seal the hair cuticle, lock out frizz-causing humidity, and enhance moisture retention to support consistent curl formation."
Well, everybody was wrong. I do not secretly have curly hair all over my head. This particular line was too heavy for 90% of my hair. The random curly bits loved it, of course! But the wavy strands felt waxy and weighed down after they air-dried.
I will say this line did successfully eliminate my frizz; however, I didn't love the overall results and didn't even end up heat styling. I
f you've got thick, curly hair that tends to frizz, I'd imagine that these Briogeo essentials would work well for you. They're also the most sensibly priced.
Effectiveness in reducing frizz: 9/10
Longevity of results: N/A. Full transparency, I ended up showering the next day because this duo just wasn't for the majority of my hair type!
Oribe Gold Lust duo
I have some bad news for your wallet, bestie. This luxury haircare duo really works.
Although not explicitly designed for frizzy hair, Oribe says the Gold Lust line is meant to "reinforce the inner strength of each strand, rejuvenate hair so it appears more youthful and healthy, restore moisture, and protect hair from damage."
To add further salt to your financial wounds, the products smell like expensive grapefruit and the bottles are really pretty. I know, I'm sorry.
My hair air-dried to perfection with these products. It felt extremely soft all over, and not only was it not frizzy, the extra-fried, heat damaged parts of my front pieces weren't even puffy. I could have got away without heat styling!
However, I wanted to see how the products held up to my flat iron. The result? A mirror-line shine and unrivaled softness. My hair stayed luxuriously soft and straight through an evening outing, a workout class, and all the way to my next wash day.
As your beauty editor pal, it's basically my duty to tell you that you can get a pack of Gold Lust minis (that will last you multiple washes) for only a couple of dollars more than a single bottle of the Gold Lust shampoo. Shop it below!
Effectiveness in reducing frizz: 10/10
Longevity of results: 9/10
